Column Types & Validation

The different column types and validation options form the very core of SkanMate. They are the key to ensuring that the data collected has the right structure and quality.

Column Types

col types example

Text

The most commonly used column type, capable of storing letters, symbols, and numbers. Suitable for everything from names to notes and often combined with validations.

Numbers

For input fields where only numeric values are allowed. Ideal for quantities, prices, and measurable values.

Yes / No

An efficient column type for simple checkpoints. Name the column intuitively for the user, for example "Approved?".

List

With "List" you define a fixed set of selectable options, displayed as a dropdown menu in the mobile app. You can decide whether the field is required.

File / Photo

This column allows you to store photos and files. On mobile, the camera function is automatically activated, allowing the user to take a new picture or choose one already stored on the device. A maximum of 5 images can be added per column.

GPS

As the name suggests, adding the GPS column type automatically attaches GPS coordinates to each individual entry via the mobile device.

Validation Rules

In SkanMate, you can add validation rules directly to your fields. This ensures that users can only enter valid values – both in the mobile app and in the web interface.

This minimizes errors and reduces time spent on post-processing, while strengthening data quality across the entire organization.

Required

Makes the field mandatory, preventing users from saving the entry without completing it.

Minimum and Maximum Length

Limit how short or long a text value can be. Used to ensure consistent and usable text fields.

Minimum and Maximum Value

Define which numeric values are allowed. Prevents unrealistic or invalid numbers.

Pattern (Regex)

Advanced validation based on regular expression patterns. Provides maximum control over formatting.

Unique Value

Ensures that a value can only occur once in the table. Ideal for identifiers and keys.

Default Value

Pre-fills the field with a predefined value, which the user can modify if needed.

Fixed Value

Locks the field to a specific value. Used when data must remain consistent across all entries.

Email Format

Ensures that the entered text is a valid email address.

Starts With / Ends With

Validates that the text begins or ends with a specific string. Suitable for codes and standardized naming conventions.

Prefix and Suffix

Automatically adds fixed text before or after the user's input.

Pattern (Regex)

Advanced validation based on regular expression patterns. Provides maximum control over formatting.

Automatic Fields

  • Timestamp: Automatically generated and can be unique.
  • User: Automatically linked to the user who created the entry.
